I understand this feature request. Check out r1238, use context-sensitive menu
on board pane, open "Board Options" dialog, disable the options "Show Piece
Shadow", "Show Piece Contour", and leave this dialog with "Ok".

Scidb still suffers from a tiling window layout, this is currently in
development, and in advanced phase.

Many thanks for your offer, but I fear that "some free time" is not enough for
doing development. You don't know the code base, and I'm sure that it takes
some weeks to become familiar only with the basics. If you really want to
participate, then use an IDE like Codelite - unfortunately I don't know a
better one - and have a look into the code base, starting with src/db, and
src/app. Note that I do not write commentaries, because commentaries are
volatile, and it costs time to maintain commentaries, I have to manage about
one million lines of code in total (only for Scidb). If you like to spent more
time for development, then I will think about an appropriate task. Are you
familiar with chess engine programming, in this case I would know a task with
less setting-in period.

I wish you joyous holidays!
Gregor
