Chicago Wilderness Education & Communication Team Workshop
Save the Elephants: Don't Buy Ivory Soap Huh? The title of this workshop comes from a campaign slogan written by an eight-year- old girl after she learned about elephant poaching in school. She was old enough to hear the message, but perhaps too young to really make sense of it. What happens when we talk with small children about big environmental problems? Some researchers say it does more harm than good-turning kids off to nature just when they should be enjoying it most. During this workshop we'll explore a theory called "ecophobia" and discuss the latest thinking in what messages are most appropriate for children of various ages and why. We'll let you know how we at Brookfield Zoo have modified our programs with "ecophobia" in mind and offer you plenty of time to reflect on and discuss the conservation messages offered at your places of work. Please join in what we hope will be a lively and enlightening workshop. Date: Tuesday, October 16, 2001 Time: 1:00 - 4:30 pm, including a visit to the new Hamill Family Play Zoo!
