In the context of pathogen recognition by host cells, we are study the mechanisms underlying the modulation of the immune response upon HPV infection. Consequently, the project aims at developing strategies to improve the understanding how viral HPV DNA can be sensed and which pathways of the anti-viral immunity become activated. Our recent experiments have revealed the disturbance of pro-inflammatory cytokine production, in particular of interferon kappa (IFN-k), constitutively expressed in normal keratinocytes. Hence keratinocytes represent an integral part of the innate immune system where IFN-k is one of the key players in controlling HPV infection. Our aim is to comprehend how DAI and the AIM2-inflammasome are regulated upon HPV infection.
