Dear "Physics Northwest" Teacher:

I am writing to invite you to participate in a QuarkNet program, sponsored
by Fermilab and the University of Chicago, to help involve and inform high
school teachers about the exciting current research work being carried out
in particle physics at Fermilab and elsewhere. There is every reason to
expect that an exceptionally important discovery will be made within the
next 6 years (or 7 at the outside): the discovery of the Higgs boson, of
SuperSymmetric Particles, of "extra dimensions" (beyond the 3 space and 1
time dimension that we are familiar with), or perhaps all of these. We in
the Chicago area have a unique opportunity to directly see what is being
done, and to visit the accelerator, particle detectors, and physicists who
are a part of this effort.

Chris Johnson (physics teacher at Wheaton North High School) and I are
organizing a 3-week paid workshop (2 weeks during July 2001, and 5 days
interspersed through the current and next school years) for a small group of
interested high school teachers. I am attaching the MSWord version of a
letter that we have recently mailed to high schools in the Chicago/Fermilab
area. More information about the QuarkNet program and its activities can be
found at the Fermilab website http://quarknet.fnal.gov/.

If you have any questions about the program, please phone me (773-702-7101
after Dec 7) or Chris Johnson (630-682-2393). If you are interested in
joining the program, send email to me by December 15, as described in the
enclosed letter.

Sincerely yours,

Frank S. Merritt, Chairman
Physics Department
University of Chicago
