NATURE IN BALANCE

This series of outdoor & environmental education courses provide an in depth experience in biodiversity education for teaching professionals.  "Project" workshops, well known and respected nationwide, provide excellent supporting curricula for our exciting student programs which feature native plant communities of northeastern Illinois.

The following Nature in Balance courses take place over 2 days and optional graduate credit is available through Aurora University. Contact Marie Bernardy at 847-835-8280 to sign up.


Winter Prairie Outdoor Education:  Recommended for teachers of grades 4-6

Fee:  $85.00

Day 1
Project WET                       
Saturday, Jan. 13, 2001               Location: Chicago Botanic Garden
9:00am - 3:30pm
Project WET will help you facilitate and promote awareness, appreciation, knowledge, and stewardship of water resources through the use classroom-ready teaching aids. Teachers will find Project WET activities appropriate and effective in helping to meet goals and objectives.  Take home Project WET curriculum and materials.

Day 2
Saturday, Jan. 20, 2001               Location: Chicago Botanic Garden
8:30am - 4:30pm
Learn to take advantage of all seasons to teach your students about nature outside!  Teachers will be prepared to bring their students to the Garden or another prairie for an in-depth field trip experience. Dress for the weather and expect to have fun! . Optional graduate credit is available through Aurora University.


Winter Woodland Outdoor Education:  Recommended for teachers of grades 3-5.

Fee:  $85.00

Sunday, Jan. 21, 2001           Location: Chicago Botanic Garden
8:30am - 4:30pm
What happens to the forest in the winter?  Field studies and outdoor explorations, as well as classroom activities, will aid discovery in the winter woodland community.   Teachers will be prepared to bring their class to the Garden or another woodland area for an in-depth field trip experience.  Dress for the weather and expect to have fun!

Day 2
Project Learning Tree
Saturday, Feb. 10, 2001Location: Chicago Botanic Garden
9:00am - 3:30pm
Project Learning Tree is an interdisciplinary environmental education program for educators working with students in Pre-K through grade 12.  Take-home curriculum book and activities will help students gain awareness and knowledge of the natural and built environment, their place within it, as well as their responsibility for it.
