I am working on a contract with Jane Fisher, Project Director for Voyages
Through Time (VTT) at the SETI Institute. VTT is a one-year high school
(9th or 10th grade) standards-based integrated science curriculum, centered
on the unifying theme of evolution and delivered on CD ROM. SETI's partners
in development are NASA Ames, the California Academy of Sciences, and San
Francisco State University. The project is primarily funded by an NSF
Instructional Materials Development grant. You can see more at
http://www.seti.org. This curriculum is outstanding and exciting.

My job is to recruit field test sites and teachers for the national field
test in the 2001-2002 school year. I am looking for 9 potential school sites
and teachers who are willing to field test the entire full-year curriculum
(all six modules in sequence), and 60 other potential teachers to field test
at least one (or more) of the modules in either integrated science or
subject-specific (earth science, biology, etc.) classes. SETI will make the
final determination on sites and teachers, selecting a total of at least 30
teachers based on criteria from their NSF grant. Final decisions will be
made by mid-February, 2001.

Field teachers and sites need to be demographically (ethnically,
socioeconomicallly, academically) and geographically diverse. We are hoping
that some of the field test schools will be involved in innovative or reform
curriculum, such as urban and rural systemic initiative participants, but we
are also looking for traditional schools. Since this is a technology-based
curriculum, teachers need to have access to and know how to use computers
with CD-ROM drives, LCD projectors, and printers. Teachers also need good
internet access on their own either at school or home to communicate with
the project and complete online evaluations.

It would be preferable to have at least 2 teachers at each school who are
field testing VTT, but it is not mandatory. The time commitment will be in
the planning (summer 2001, minimal), insuring proper computer, projection
and net needs, and then completing online evaluations of each module and
activities within the module on an ongoing basis as the activities are
taught. Most of the activity and lesson evaluations are done online via
WestEd's EdGateway network, and should take no more than 10-15 minutes per
activity.
