EcoWatch Coordinator for Chicago Wilderness
Full-time Position
The Field Museum, Environmental and Conservation Programs
The Illinois EcoWatch Network is a volunteer-based statewide network of ecosystem monitoring programs coordinated through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Through such programs as Illinois RiverWatch, ForestWatch, PrairieWatch, WetlandWatch and UrbanWatch, trained adult volunteers and high school science teachers and students collect ecological data used by scientists to monitor long-term trends in ecosystem condition. Through the data collection process, EcoWatch Citizen Scientists gain knowledge about the ecology and importance of Illinois environments.
The EcoWatch Coordinator will work on the Illinois EcoWatch Network programs and be based at The Field Museum. The coordinator will primarily be involved with the UrbanWatch program. The responsibilities of the position are detailed below.
Responsibilities:
- Organize and conduct UrbanWatch teacher training workshops.
- Oversee the involvement of trained UrbanWatch teachers and volunteers.
- Manage and implement the work of the UrbanWatch Teacher Advisory Board.
- Coordinate the revision process of UrbanWatch training materials such as the CD-ROM and web site.
- Work with the Conservation Education Director to integrate UrbanWatch into the Chicago Public high schools and Chicago Wilderness.
- Attend and participate in promotional workshops and other non-training events for the UrbanWatch program.
- Promote the Illinois EcoWatch Network through Chicago Wilderness partner institutions and within the Chicagoland area.
- Recruit Chicago Wilderness volunteers and Chicago area high school teachers to participate in the EcoWatch monitoring programs.
Skills required: Must be a graduate of a BA/BS program preferably in environmental science, biology, or science education with 3-4 years experience in the related field. Knowledge of local natural history and experience in informal or formal education is preferred. Must have good written and verbal communication skills, computer and Internet literacy, and the ability to work with a variety of people. Must have a car (required to travel within the 6 county Chicagoland area).
Time: Start date March 1, 2001. This is a full-time position with fringe benefits. Includes occasional weekend and evening hours.
Pay scale: $27,000- $30,000 depending upon experience.
