Let's not forget to get the word out, teachers. Check this out from the Sun Times. I'm a grammar school teacher in a Chicago public school. In my classroom I have 33 students, first and second grade, who speak Spanish and English. Mayor Daley and the Board of Education talk about school reform, summer school, after-school and all kind of schools. If they really want to improve the schools, then they had better start talking to the people who really know what goes on--especially in the classroom. Most of the advisers never have been in a classroom, and the others have been out of the classrooms too long. Smaller class size should be first on the list, along with real teacher input. My friend teaches 30 students in first and second grade, in both Spanish and English, including one student who is hearing impaired--all in a mobile unit that was meant for 20 students. School officials can change the curriculum every year, but until teachers are taken into consideration, there never will be permanent solutions.
