5 March 2001 Dear Department Head, The Institute for Science Education and Science Communication will sponsor the National Science Foundation (NSF) funded program "Physical Science Workshops for Teachers of Grades 7, 8, 9 - Creating the critical mass for a chain reaction of change" this summer from July 2 to 24 with follow-up workshop meetings (held once or twice a month) during the course of the academic year from September 2001 to May 2002. The goals of the program are to enhance knowledge and instructional skills of science teachers, increase achievement levels of students in science, and create a lasting school environment designed to foster an interest and positive attitude toward science and school. Participating teachers will also be exposed to new alternative assessment methods, science visualization, and teaching reading through science. Teachers enrolled in the program will earn a stipend, and a maximum of five Lane promotional credits. In addition, they will learn creative instructional methods in science and increase their content knowledge of different physical science disciplines. For an individual to be eligible, we need interested and available teachers willing to make a commitment to participate in the year-long series of workshops. Please submit names of interested parties no later than 25 May 2001. The earlier we have nominations, the better the chance for a teacher to be accepted into the program. Phone the Science Institute at 312-344-7180 for an application or e-mail << [EMAIL PROTECTED] >> and type << NSF Workshops >> in the subject line; please do not send requests back to this CPS Science Teacher List. We look forward to hearing from you! -- This is the CPS Science Teacher List.
