PHYSICSBOWL 2000 The PhysicsBowl is co-sponsored by AAPT and Metrologic, Inc., a leader in laser and holographic technology. The PhysicsBowl Exam is a 40-question multiple-choice, timed test, supervised and administered by the local high school teacher. Deadline for entries is April 2. -------------------------------------------------- 2. AAPT APPARATUS COMPETITION Applications are now being solicited for the annual AAPT Apparatus Competition. Entries will be displayed and judged at the 123rd AAPT National Meeting, July 21�25, 2001. Prizes are $100 each in the Low-Cost category ($65 or less to build), and up to 6 low-cost prizes may be awarded. In the Lecture Demo / Advanced Lab category the prizes are 1st: $1000, 2nd: $600, and 3rd: $200. PASCO Scientific provides the prize money for the apparatus competition. The application deadline is May 1, 2001. OUTSTANDING TEACHING ASSISTANT PROGRAM Nominate your outstanding teaching assistant to be awarded a free student membership in AAPT. Annually, AAPT solicits nominations for Outstanding Teaching Assistants to be recipients of the AAPT Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. The department chair of any university with a graduate physics program may nominate one TA at that institution who will then be awarded the AAPT Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award. The award includes a complimentary one-year student membership in AAPT. The award winners may elect to receive either the American Journal of Physics or The Physics Teacher with their memberships. Awardees will also be listed in the September issue of the Announcer (as long as the nominator submits the awardees name prior to the deadline). OUTSTANDING STUDENT CERTIFICATES As a service to the physics education community, AAPT will provide to any high school physics teacher who is a member in good standing a certificate which may then be awarded by the teacher to his or her outstanding physics student at year-end honor assemblies. Teachers need to submit their requests each year to automatically receive a certificate in mid-Spring. SUMMER RESEARCH AND WORKSHOP OPPORTUNITIES A list of summer research and workshop opportunities for undergraduate students, pre-college teachers, and college/university faculty is available on the Physical Sciences Resource Center (PSRC) (http://www.psrc-online.org/). NEW REPORT AVAILABLE FROM AIP STATISTICAL RESEARCH CENTER The 2000 Physics Academic Workforce Report provides the latest data on physics faculty at the 766 departments that offer at least a bachelor's degree in physics. The number of openings for physics faculty is up substantially from just a few years ago. Physics departments report that they recruited for over 500 tenured and tenure track openings plus about 180 temporary positions such as visiting professors and sabbatical replacements. This report also contains data on the retirement rate among physics faculty, the characteristics of new hires, and the representation of minorities among physics faculty.
