An excellent report by the Physical Sciences Resource Center reviewing middle
school physical science textbooks is available online at http://www.psrc-
online.org/curriculum/book.html. The authors point out that errors in content
are common in the physical sciences and that most authors have life science
backgrounds. The report is disturbing given that few middle school teachers
have the necessary content skills to catch the errors and that textbook
publishers do nothing to correct errors so that they are perpetuated in
supposedly revised editions. The answer lies in training teachers to be more
competent in teaching science and not to rely on a textbook to do their
teaching.
