The 100th Anniversary and Annual Conference of the School Science and Mathematics Association will be held at the DoubleTree Guest Suites and Esplanade Conference Center in the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove, IL on November 1-3, 2001.

Plans for this historic meeting have been in the works for some time now. These plans offer a number of unique and informative opportunities for professional sharing and growth with sessions dealing with topics of interest to both researchers and practitioners. The conference theme and format will allow us to explore the rich history of accomplishments in science, mathematics, and technology education, to examine our current efforts and issues, and to expand our thinking about possibilities for the next century.

Our Thursday afternoon "Kick-off" keynoter will be Rodger Bybee, Executive Director of the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS). Other "special" sessions planned include Nobel Laureate, Leon Lederman, a possible visit to the FermiLab facilities, and, we hope, a very special evening at the Adler Planetarium. The Friday evening banquet will provide the setting for our 100th anniversary party. The speaker/entertainment (quite likely Scott Carpenter, Mercury 7 astronaut) is still under negotiation, but the evening is sure to be an enjoyable, entertaining, and informative celebration.
We will also have sessions focusing on the integration of mathematics and science, the past, present and future of science and mathematics education, and opportunities to honor long-time contributors to the mission and goals of SSMA. (Further info on SSMA may be found at  http://www.ssma.org/ )

And, there will be lots of other surprises which will make attending very worthwhile!! For example, everyone registered for the conference will receive anniversary gifts from the Association -- most notably, a searchable CD pack containing all 100 years of the SSMA journal. This gift from SSMA is valued at over $125! This exceptional product is only available free of charge to those members attending the anniversary conference.

We have negotiated an excellent rate of $89.00 (single/double) or $99.00 (triple/quad) at the all-suite DoubleTree in Downers Grove. IL. Call direct to (630) 971-2000 for room reservations.

The DoubleTree is centrally located between O'hare International and Midway airports, right in the heart of the Illinois Science and Mathematics corridor. It offers a quiet retreat for meetings such as ours. The property is located just north of the intersection of the East-West and the North-South tollways and is only minutes from the OakBrook and Yorktown shopping areas. Indicate you are attending the conference for the School Science and Mathematics Association (use full organization name, not just initials). A block of rooms is being held for SSMA and we need to guarantee a certain number of room nights. You will be asked to leave a credit card deposit that WILL NOT be charged to your card if the room is canceled up to 48 hours prior to the meeting. Since the hotel informs us that November is a particularly busy time and we have negotiated great rates, please make your room reservations as soon as you know your plans.
