You and/or colleagues in your school district may be interested in these
CPU summer workshops. This is an update of my earlier post on them; notice
the new workshop at Rockhurst University in Kansas City.

 CPU (Constructing Physics Understanding) was an NSF project led by Fred
Goldberg at San Diego State University. Modeling Instruction and CPU are
similar instructional designs, but CPU doesn't emphasize mathematical
modeling, so it's especially good for middle school, early high school, and
conceptual physics courses.

Jane:  The Southwest Michigan team will be holding 3 CPU Workshops this
summer at Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo Michigan for separate
audiences.  Since they are being supported with Michigan IKE dollars,
Michigan teachers have first priority, but others are welcome on a space
available basis.  These workshops, topics, and dates are as follows:

Elementary Teaachers    Light & Color           June 18 - 22, 2001
Middle-School Teachers   Current Electricity        July 9 -13, 2001
High-School Teachers    Waves & Vibrations      July 23 - 27, 2001

The one-week workshops for middle- and high-school teachers are
implementation workshops and are designed to acquaint teachers with the
respective units and to help them plan to use the units in their
classrooms.  The elementary teacher workshop is a content workshop and is
designed to help content-poor elementary teachers develop a richer and
deeper understanding of the key scientific ideas in that topic.  All the
workshops help teachers to understand how to use the CPU pedagogy which is
essentially an inquiry-based, constructivist-oriented pedagogy.

    The Northeast Michigan team at Saginaw Valley State University will be
offering a one week CPU session on the topic Waves and Sound from Monday
June 18 - Friday June 22 at SVSU.  Each day's session will run from 8:30 -

Rockhurst University is pleased to announce the Constructing Physics
Understanding (CPU) Waves, Sound, Light and Color Summer Workshop for
elementary and middle school science teachers.  The goal of the workshop is
to increase participants' conceptual understanding of physics and physical
science principles using computer-based laboratory acitivites.

Participants will explore Waves, Sound, Light and Color using hands-on
computer lab activities, group discussion and the constructivist approach.
The instructional strategies and hands-on activities will be suitable for
adaptation to the classroom.  Lesson plans will be developed to incorporate
CPU activities and strategies into classroom curriculum.

The workshop will be held at Rockhurst University, Kansas City, MO from
June 11 - 22, 2001 and can be taken for three hours of graduate physics
credit. Participants receive over $600 worth of Computer Lab Equipment
(Universal Lab Interface and MBL equipment), software, and materials for
classroom use.

There is no charge for the workshop (with the exception of a $50
matriculation fee for new Rockhurst students).  For more information,
