JOB OPENING

Education Coordinator
Education Department

Responsibilities
The Museum of Science and Industry is seeking candidates to coordinate two
curriculum partnerships programs, SEPA and MAPS. SEPA is a collaboration
between the Museum of Science and Industry and Northwestern University's
School of Education and Biomedical Engineering. MAPS (Museums and Public
Schools) is a collaboration between Museum's in the Parks and the Chicago
Public Schools.

The focus of SEPA (Science Education Partnership Award, funded by the
National Institutes of Health) is to create a middle and high school biology
curriculum that will uniquely bridge formal classroom learning and informal
science center learning. The curriculum focus is on topics relevant to
cutting-edge cardiovascular research. Project responsibilities include
co-coordinating curriculum development with the Northwestern coordinator and
a "work circle" team of six teachers, and co-developing a three week
professional development institute for teachers that is research based and
technology rich. The coordinator will also work collaboratively with the
project evaluator and assist with data collection, analysis and
interpretation as needed. Additionally, the Museum coordinator will maintain
a relationship with the partners and manage the project budget.

MAPS is a collaboration that brings together the Chicago Public Schools and
Museum's to create interdisciplinary curriculum and integrate museum
resources into the classroom. The curriculum is currently being used by 240
teachers and is expected to expand during the 2001-2002 school year to 480
teachers. Coordinator responsibilities include writing and editing
curriculum, delivering teacher professional development workshops and making
school site visits. Additionally, each museum participates in a principal
orientation and the annual MAPS fall kick-off event.

Qualifications
A Masters degree in biology/life sciences and prior teaching experience is
preferred. Candidates must be technology literate and familiar with
technology as a tool in teaching and learning. Candidates should have an
understanding of school culture and knowledge of informal learning.
Teamwork, time management and both oral and written communication skills are
a must. Successful candidates will also have experience in budget management
and be a self-starter with the ability to work independently.
