Information and forms can be found at the AAPT website, http://www.aapt.org, under Meetings. --------------------------------------- 2. 2001 SUMMER MEETING POST DEADLINE ABSTRACTS The deadline to submit post deadline contributed and poster abstracts for the Summer Meeting in Rochester, NY is July 13. There is no longer a fee associated with abstract submissions, and while only one contributed oral paper may be given per individual, there is no limit to the number of poster papers that may be submitted. HIGHLIGHTS OF 2001 SUMMER MEETING AT ROCHESTER The 123rd AAPT National Meeting being held in Rochester, NY, July 21-25, 2001, will focus on the science of light...optics! Included in the theme will be a workshop on light, sessions such as Women's Contributions to Contemporary Optics, Integrated Physics - Lecture, Lab & Demo: Optics, Optical Fiber Communications, and Photography and Physics to name a few. Outstanding Plenary speakers include: Joseph Eberly speaking Monday on %%%Even Stranger Than We Supposed: From Max Planck to Teleportation,%%% Emil Wolf's %%%Recollections of Max Born%%% on Tuesday, and David Williams on Wednesday with %%%The Limits of Human Vision.%%% Other special events taking place: sessions involving the National Technical Institute for the Deaf, poster sessions, and the PER Conference. The meeting will culminate Wednesday evening with a picnic and tour of the George Eastman House, followed by a Demo Show and Laser Light Show on High Falls. Jackson, Santa Clara University, [EMAIL PROTECTED] This is the second Gordon Research Conference (GRC) in a series of conferences that will focus on how research in physics and research in physics education can be used to improve the teaching of physics, primarily at the undergraduate level. The first of these conferences, held in June 2000, focused on the teaching of thermal and statistical physics, and a theme issue of the American Journal of Physics was published on this topic in December 2000. The focus of the 2002 conference is the teaching of Quantum Mechanics. Special attention will be given to areas of current research and technological interest that can be included in such courses, physics and chemistry education research on conceptual understanding of quantum mechanics, and innovative curricular materials and approaches. Examples of appropriate topics include lab experiments, computational projects, quantum physics at the introductory level, ways of incorporating modern developments and applications, and the integration of quantum mechanics and classical mechanics. The goal is to bring together workers who are active in research in quantum mechanics, researchers in the new field of physics education, and people who teach courses in quantum mechanics at the undergraduate level.
