Daley: Chico leaving school board presidency

By Gary Washburn

Gery J. Chico has resigned as president of the Chicago Board of
Education, Mayor Richard Daley announced today.

Daley praised Chico, his former chief of staff, for his six years of
service on the school board. He said Chico felt it was time to move on
to other things, and to devote more time to his family and business.
Chico's full-time job is with the Altheimer & Gray law firm.

"Six years is a long time," Daley said. "He did a tremendous job."

Daley dropped the bombshell this afternoon during a
question-and-answer session with the media at a senior citizens event.

The mayor said Chico's resignation was voluntary and not requested.

Asked about recent reports of renewed tension between Chico and
schools CEO Paul Vallas over control of the state's largest public
school system, Daley said he didn't think that played a role in
Chico's decision to resign.

Daley said that he hasn't determined who will succeed Chico, but that
he expected to make a decision "in a week or so," and he added that he
may look outside the current school board for a successor.

Chico was expected to hold a news conference this afternoon at Board
of Education offices.
