CREDIT COURSE 2001: Building for Space Travel July 9-11, 2001 This exciting three-day interdisciplinary course is a unique collaboration between The Art Institute of Chicago and the Adler Planetarium and Astronomy Museum, designed to link architecture and design with the world of astronomy. The exhibition and this course explore how the history of space exploration has been impacted by the world of architecture, design, and film. Following the course, teachers are urged to make a joint field trip with their students to both museums between October 1 and 19 or the Art Institute between July 11 and August 3. To foster a dialog of the arts and sciences during this course, we encourage pairs or groups of teachers of art and science from the same school to register for this program. Art and science teacher pairs from one school who register together will each receive a $10 discount for the entire three-day course. All participants will receive a 50% discount on the related teacher manual ($10 with the discount), Exploration and the Cosmos. Register for one, two, or all three sessions. Session One: Space Travel at the Art Institute Monday, July 9, 9:30-3:30 Fee: $25 Curator John Zukowski presents an overview of 2001: Building for Space Travel and gives participants a private tour of the exhibition. Museum education staff guide teachers through the Art Institute to view art with space-related themes in the galleries. Staff and participants discuss additional works in the permanent collection and suggest strategies for integrating this interdisciplinary material into the classroom. Elizabeth Seaton discusses space-related Web sites suitable for use in the classroom. Session Two: Space Travel at the Adler Planetarium Tuesday, July 10, 9:30-3:30 Fee: $30 This session starts at the Adler Planetarium, the first planetarium and now the largest in the Western Hemisphere. Participants examine Adler buildings as well as their outstanding outdoor sculpture collection including America's Courtyard. Adler Planetarium education staff guide participants through their world-renowned collection of historic astronomical instruments including one of the earliest known telescopes dating to1630. Explore the world of historical astronomy with Adler staff in a viewing of the exhibition From the Night Sky to the Big Bang. Adler Planetarium education staff provide curriculum connections and hands-on activities suitable for the classroom that include the building of an astrolabe. Session Three: Space Travel in Literature and the Media Wednesday, July 11, 9:30-3:30 Fee: $25 This program begins at the Art Institute with "Amazing Space," a performance of dramatic readings from legendary science fiction writers such as Jules Verne, Issac Asimov, and Ray Bradbury. See a slideshow of the futuristic designs of the architect Paolo Soleri. Mary Sue Glosser discusses the impact of popular film on the designs of space engineers, especially those who designed Skylab, America's first space station.
