Rehab moves Jones Prep to old building May 31, 2001 BY KATE N. GROSSMAN STAFF REPORTER Since late 1999, students and faculty at one of the city's new selective high schools have thought their South Loop school would be renovated by this fall. Instead, they will spend at least part of the 2001-2002 year at a dilapidated school slated for demolition on the Near North Side. At a meeting tonight, their principal and Chicago school officials will explain why Jones Academic Magnet College Prep must move temporarily to Near North Metro High School, 1450 N. Larrabee, which has a sinking foundation. Students had expected to stay at Jones during the $40 million, top-to-bottom renovation and expansion. But a similar renovation while classes continued at Southside College Preparatory Academy over the last 18 months proved to be a mistake. "It was very disruptive for students and faculty," said Tim Martin, chief operating officer for the city schools. The Near North building was to close after its last class graduates in June, but Martin said the school is safe for short-term use. "They wouldn't put us over there if it wasn't safe," said Cynthia Barron, Jones' principal. -- This is the CPS Science Teacher List.
