Program Name: University School for Science, Math, and
Reading Talent-U-SMMART
Program Theme: "Math and Science in Everyday Life"

Program Design: The Chicago Public Schools Prep program is
designed to support students as they advance toward high academic
achievement. Each university partner designs its own instructional program,
using the thematic approach that meets CPS curriculum standards, and that
supports the students as they improve their content knowledge and academic
skills in preparing for high school entrance examinations to selective high
schools with a focus on mathematics and science. The selected students,
currently at or above grade level, will participate in a six week highly
structured summer program and a Saturday program during the academic year,
until graduation.
Program Objectives:
* To motivate students toward academic
pursuits by providing experiences on a college campus.
* To develop an understanding of
cultural diversity through a variety of group and multicultural experiences.
* To increase the number of students
eligible to apply to Chicago public high schools that has selective
admission requirements.
* To improve students' reading and
mathematics skills.

Program Dates: Summer: June 18, 2001 thru July 27, 2001
Monday thru Friday - 9:00
a.m. to 2:00 p.m.
Fall: October 2001 thru May 2002
Selected Saturday's ONLY -
9:00 a.m. - 12:00 noon
Target Population & 5th and 6th Grade
Selection Criteria:
* Has a stanine of 5 or above in
reading and/or mathematics as measured by the Iowa Tests of Basic Skills,
using spring scores.
* Will be entering the sixth, seventh,
or eighth grade in September
* Has an attendance rate of 90% or
better
Courses Taught: Science, Math, Reading/Language Arts, and
Computer Skills.
Teachers Need: (1) - 6th grade Science (1) - 6th grade
Reading/Language Arts
(1) - 7th grade Science (1) - 7th grade
Reading/Language Arts

Teacher Qualifications: Middle School Certificate in subject area
Compensation: 125 per day
Program Structure:
U-SSMART is a math and science enrichment program that will be structured
around the theme, "Math and Science in Everyday Life". Teachers in the
program will design curriculum around the theme to assist students in their
improvements in school performance and test taking skills, and to dispel the
myth that math and science are remote and vague concepts that have no
meaning in their daily lives. The academic content will be based an
integrative teaching and learning model, through real-world problem-
solving. This problem-based approach allows for interdisciplinary work.
Each core academic course will consist of six study modules and each module
should intentionally require substantial participation by students to
prevent passive learning. The goal of each module is to help students learn
through the use of hands-on experiments designed to demonstrate specific
math and science concepts. Specific modules are augmented through the use
of learning activities, teacher-planned field trips, and extensive computer
and communication training. Students are able to experience the
relationship between academics and real life, making their schooling
relevant to their day-to-day existence, and equipping them with critical
thinking skills that can be used throughout their lifetime. Integrative
teaching and learning through real-world problem solving refers to creating
a curriculum that draws on multiple disciplines, various instructional
strategies, and learning activities around a selected problem. Problems
require a solution, and to reach a solution, the learner becomes actively
engaged in the problem-solving process.
