You are invited to attend a seminar sponsored by Region 5's REACH (Region 5
Actions for Children's Health) to learn about "Lead Poisoning: Diet and
Dirt".
This presentation will be on Wednesday, June 27, 2001, 3:00 P.M. - 4:00
P.M. in LAKE Superior Room, at USEPA Region 5, 77 W. Jackson Blvd, Chicago,
IL, 12th Floor Conference Center.
At this seminar you will have the chance to hear from Dr. Helen Binns,
M.D., M.P.H., Director, Lead Evaluation Clinic, Children's Memorial
Hospital.
Her presentation will focus on two aspects of lead poisoning which receive
less attention than lead paint hazards, but are important components in
understanding a child's risk for lead poisoning. Some of the topics that
will be covered are:
Relationships between dietary components and lead absorption.
Important dietary elements concerning iron, calcium, water, vitamin
C, fat, and fasting.
Importance of diet for young children and pregnant women.
The evidence for independent effects of iron deficiency in infancy
on long-term neurocognitive development.
The urban environment and the higher likelihood of
lead-contaminated soil.
Urban soil lead contamination and interventions.
Newer ideas concerning phytoextraction and phytoremediation (i.e.,
use of plants for control of lead hazards).
