Northeastern Illinois University seeks a Director for a grant-supported project whose goal is to increase the number of students, including students of underrepresented groups, majoring in the physical sciences and mathematics. The position is half time; the possibility of supplemental teaching opportunities exists. The objectives of the project are to develop faculty skills in innovative pedagogies; revise the physical science and mathematics core curricula to strengthen interdisciplinary links, including space science, with an emphasis on revising the introductory physics sequence; and to develop a community of pedagogically innovative science and mathematics faculty. This three-year project is supported by NASA and the United Negro College Fund. The Director will work closely with a faculty team to develop new strategies for teaching the physical sciences and mathematics, set up and run the project office, advertise the program, prepare brochures and announcements, set up and maintain the project web page, maintain all personnel and budgetary records, oversee assessment, oversee travel arrangements, supervise the clerical staff, and schedule outside speakers. Base salary for this half time position is $20,000. Qualifications: M.S. or Ph.D. in science or mathematics, or in education with a strong science background; and knowledge of innovative and effective science and mathematics pedagogies.
