If so, the Chicago Public Schools system is looking for you! Our nationally recognized school system is seeking a high-energy self-starter to fill the job vacated last week by the nationally recognized Mr. Paul Vallas. If CEO of the CPS sounds like the job you want in your obituary headline, read on! Our motto in the Chicago Public Schools is "Testing is job one!" To prove that commitment, we are requiring all applicants for this exciting post to answer the following questions. Tests will be submitted for scoring to Mayor Richard M. Daley, who is expected to announce the winner this week. Test results will be kept confidential, unless leaking them seems like a good idea. 1. I would like to become Chicago's next schools chief because I: a. Want to continue the dynamic school reform presided over by Mayor Richard M. Daley. b. Can't resist jobs in which I feel like I'm in a non-stop air attack. c. Am certifiably nuts. 2. I am qualified to be Chicago's next schools chief because: a. I believe, as does Mayor Richard M. Is a household name, which is pretty weird for a school administrator, don't you think? 4. I think a city that turns a guy like Paul Vallas into a celebrity is: a. Cool, in a frumpy kind of way. b. Tragically short on celebrities. c. Paul Vallas? Is he that French poet I always meant to read in college? 5. When I consider the prospect of working with teachers, I: a. Look forward to sharing ideas with talented, committed, grossly underpaid professionals. b. Go stand in a corner cause I know I'm guilty of something. c. Remember mean Miss Bitters from 4th grade and think, "It's payback time!" 6. When I consider overseeing a $3.5 billion annual budget, I think: a. I'll find a way to increase the benefits to children while paying teachers fairly. b. How come Paul Vallas earned only $175,000 of that? c. Uh-oh. I can't even balance my checkbook. 7. I believe the chief attributes of a good Chicago schools chief are: a. Good communication skills, good organization, a passion for education, a devotion to children, stamina and optimism. b. A thick skin. c. An ability to suck up to Mayor Richard M. Daley 8. The term "social promotion" refers to: a. The unacceptable practice of promoting failing students to the next grade. b. A necessary evil. c. What I will get big-time if I get this job and get to hang out with Mayor Richard M. Daley, though I am fully aware that most serious candidates for the job have already been granted this promotion. 9. I believe the best preparation for being Chicago schools chief is a job in: a. A park b. A library c. A maximum-security prison 10. I believe that measuring achievement through test scores is: a. A necessary evil. b. Easier than reading essays. c.
