Dear Educators,

It's not too late to register for the Teachers Workshop, Teaching Energy
Sources to High School Students held Sunday, June 24, 2001, 5:00 p.m. to
Friday, June 29, 2001, 3:00 p.m., on the
campus of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Program
registration, Sunday supper, workshop luncheons, tour transportation and
workshop materials will be provided free to all participants. We are very
excited about this workshop and know that it will be an informative and

irradiation damage and effects, mechanical properties, high temperature
corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, electron microscopy.

Teaching an Unfamiliar Subject
High school science teachers would like to be better prepared to teach
topics related to energy sources that they are asked to teach in a unit at
the end of the student's junior or senior year.

Although the text book material is correct, it does nothing to encourage the
teacher to supplement the material or to make the subject fun and
interesting.

The faculty of the Department of Nuclear, Plasma and Radiological
Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is eager to
share its knowledge and experience in teaching topics related to energy
sources.

Workshop Topics Include:

• What is radiation and how is it used
• Common radioactive materials
• Fuel cycle • Fission • TMI
• Chernobyl • Radioactive waste
• Fusion • Licensing • IFR/Breeders
• Medical and environmental uses
• The Economics of it all

Workshop Tours Include:

• UI Teaching Reactor
• Clinton Nuclear Power Plant

Professional Development (CPDUs)

Section 21-14 of the School Code requires that teachers employed in
positions which legally require certification and certified teachers
employed in charter schools must engage in professional development during
the period of the certificates' validity in order to renew those
certificates. This workshop will satisfy up to 30 CPDUs for Illinois
teachers. Organized in cooperation with the University of Illinois Office of
Continuing Education Division of Academic Outreach.
