Paul,
 just finished an upgrade.
What worked:
 yum --releasever 6.4 upgrade --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=sl*,epel*

what didn't:
 yum upgrade

once upgrade completed and before reboot i re-installed the nvidia driver.
boot and life is good and warm
