See if there's anything interesting in your $HOME/.xsession-errors file.

You'll probably need to get your VM into a console session with
ctrl-alt-f1 (or f2, or...). If you're running VMware on Linux, you'll
need to use a slightly different sequence to get the ctrl-alt-f1 all
the way through to the VM: hold down ctrl+alt, hit space, then hit f1.
Do not release the ctrl+alt throughout this sequence.
