Have any of you-all considered replacing (student) linux workstations with small single-board arm systems (eg a Raspberry Pi2 or TI's Beagleboard)? In terms of unit cost and power consumption they seem like an attractive solution for run of the mill, interactive work.
We're hoping to see Vmware provide support for Linux based VDI images. Our two teaching labs used to be equipped with Sun SunRay thin client devices which provided a Scientific Linux Gnome desktop. That was great for our instructors who wanted to use Linux open source software but not so great for the vast majority of courses that utilize Windows based applications. We have now switched to Dell Wyze Zero Client devices to access a VDI image. That was a great improvement for most of our courses but we've had to send instructors who want a Linux environment off to a lab managed by our Physics department. The ability to have Linux based VDI would enable all of our instructors to use our labs. I've heard that Vmware are working on a beta release of Linux VDI images so things are moving in the right direction.
