The packages in sl6x repos generally have a higher version or release number, thus take precedence. The repositories may also have a "cost" set in the /etc/yum.repos.d/*.repo files, which create a preference for one repo over another, but that's tuneable. sl6x normally contains all of sl6 and some updated packages, not necessarily in the release or updates repositories yet, which is why it can be so useful.
