Jon,
I thinking it might be a frame buffer problem. If it is, then you would get the same behavior if you brought over the SL 4.4 install CD's.
What if you tried giving the --nofb option at the command line.

But then again, I don't know if that's available on the live cd

p.s. Or I could be completely off.

We don't get as far as anything which resembles a 'command-line', the system reset itself really really early -- like during the read of the CD boot-sectors or maybe while ISOLINUX starting up. It certainly doesn't display the livecd splash screen...

Sadly I can only try these boxes by going to a room 2 miles away which is only open during office hours, or I'd have done more tests already...

I'd planned to take over the install disk isos for the current 5rolling, but having checked there arn't any (yet?). Since I can't PXE boot these machines is there an obvious way to get far enough into the install to check if it detects all the hardware? Would the images in 5rolling/{i386,x86_64}/images/boot.iso be much use?

BTW this reminds me that the SL44 installer (for PXE anyway) crashes when it detects certain models of ATI cards (X600 on Dell GX620 systems for example). Obviously the X server thinks it can cope but causes the system to freeze. Tricking it into using the VESA driver fixes it for me...
