up2date uses the config file
/etc/sysconfig/rhn/sources
So, if you ever want to edit where it's getting it's errata from (say a
local mirror) then you'll know where it's going.
If you look at that file, it has only two lines uncommented
yum scientific-base
ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/40rolling/$ARCH/SL/RPMS/
yum scientific-errata
ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/40rolling/$ARCH/errata/SL/RPMS/
So that is where you are getting your updates from.
Why rolling and not 44?
Because when I originally did it back in SL3, up2date didn't work, so I
figured, why keep changing it if it doesn't work.
Then when we moved to SL4, I figured people who use up2date, are used to
always getting moved up to the latest thing on RedHat, so I left it.
But I have been informed that nor everyone who uses up2date wants to be
pointed to the rolling area. So in SL 4.5, it will be changed to point
to 4.5, to match the release.
So, if you wanted you could edit it to say
yum scientific-base
ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/44/$ARCH/SL/RPMS/
yum scientific-errata
ftp://ftp.scientificlinux.org/linux/scientific/44/$ARCH/errata/SL/RPMS/

I see only SL Kernel 2.6.9-42.0.3 available.
Where did my Up2Date obtain kernel-2.6.9-42.0.10.EL from?
Only scientific base and scientific eratta are enabled in my channels.
Can someone tell me where kernel-2.6.9-42.0.10.EL.i686.rpm is located on
the SL update servers?

In the file /etc/sysconfig/rhn/up2date make sure that the following
lines do not contain 'kernel':
pkgSkipList[comment]=A list of package names, optionally including
wildcards, to skip
pkgSkipList=;
fileSkipList[comment]=A list of file names, optionally including
wildcards, to skip
fileSkipList=;
Then rerun up2date.
