As a curiousity question.
Why are you formating the partition beforehand, and not during the install?

If you format it during the install, what happens?

Also, how many partitions are labeled "/"?

I ask this because Ubuntu doesn't use labels for it's fstab, so it goes ahead and labels all it's / directories "/". (At least it used to do this, if I'm wrong, please let me know when they changed.) RedHat based distributions use labels in it's fstab, and if there are more than 1, it get's confused. But if during the install, it see's that there is already a partition labeled "/", then it will label it's paritition "/1" or "/12" and so forth. I believe I have a partition labeled "/12345678". So there is a possiblity, if you aren't letting the installer do anything with the partition, that it just isn't setup the way that a RedHat based distro likes.
