I don't have the lm_sensors package excluded, I just don't use the lm_sensors
as supplied by SL but the one supplied by ATrpms, as it's much more updated
and supported the chipset on the motherboard I am running on that server.

yup, that explains it. atrpms package supplies libsensors.so.3, not .1, which "breaks" dependencies only for the most recent kdebase update. [NB: Probably means that one couldn't install atrpms lm_sensors on centos 3.8 either]
