Hi Steve,
Thank you for all the information. It is always better to have too much than not enough. Nothing jumps out at me for being wrong, so I'll ask some more questions.

When you partition the disk during the install, how are you partitioning it?
Are you doing it manually? Are you using the automatic partitioning?
Are you removing all the partitions and making new ones? Are you using the existing partitions?
Which partitions are you formating, which are you leaving along?

Hi,

The SL 5.1 anaconda just crashed on me three times, fortunately before it
formatted the partitions.

After I had finished setting up the partitions and networking and packages,
after it had verified the consistency of the packages, I came to a window
that prompted me if I wanted to start the installation. I clicked "Next"
and got an error dialog:

================================================================
        Error informing the kernel about modifications to
partition/dev/sda5--Device or resource busy. This means Linux won't know about
any changes you made to /dev/sda5 until you reboot--so you shouldn't mount it
or use it in any way before rebooting.
================================================================

It prompted me to "ignore" or "cancel". I tried it each way, with the same
result: an exception window, and no choice but to re-boot.

The machine is a 2411 MHz x86_64 dual-core  (family 15 model37) with 8GB RAM.

It has a Fiber Channel connection (I tried the install both
connected and unconnected).

It also has an IPMI card.

The system hard disk is nothing special (maybe a little over-partitioned)
