Choosing "Select driver" brings up a list but where to find any of these
because I don't know if they are for the hard drive, the motherboard, PC bus etc ?

I've been there recently with F9beta or thereabouts. I recognise a lot of the drivers, many are for network drivers and hardly useful

I checked the website of my hard drive just installed, for this purpose
(SL5.0) so I can keep Vista on the original drive too. But they say no
drivers are needed for my new hard drive, that it's a controller for the
motherboard or something else.

Anyone familiar about where to start?

The chances are good that if Anaconda can't find a useful driver, it doesn't have one. Check the vendor's website for a suitable driver for Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.0. With any luck, there will be a suitable driver disk image for you to download and use.
