On the SL44 32-bit machines, it is working fine. I tried running "yum
clean all" before the "yum update" but still got the same error
messages about missing dependencies needed by package libpurple.

Looks like we needed to put "meanwhile" into the errata area for SL 50.
It is there now and the updates now work. Thanks for reporting this.
If you are going to check it right now, you will need to do a
yum clean all
Or else your yum won't see the updated repo.
