Because SUN in its endless wisdom never built a 64bit plugin. Hopefully that
changes with the ongoing opensource Java Implementation.
There are java-1.6.0-openjdk rpms available from epel (5 only), including
the x86_64 plugin. I haven't tried these yet, but next time I touch the
java stuff that's what I'll look at first.

Since /etc/sysconfig/nspluginwrapper excludes libjavaplugin* by default
we still don't have a 64bit java browser plugin :-(
Yep, nspluginwrapper can't do anything with libjavaplugin, as it uses a
different API.
I use the following method to get a javaplugin on a 64bit system:
Deinstall firefox.x86_64 and install firefox.i386 if not already installed.
Install jre 1.6 32bit from sun in parallel to jdk 1.5
(as the 32bit plugin from jdk 1.5 does not work with 64bit java installed in
parallel, and the 64bit version is needed for anything else).
Link per Hand the plugin from jre1.6 into /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins
now we have a firefox with java plugin.
This misses the totem plugins, so we take the totem-mozplugin rpm from i386
system and install that (Troy could you please pack the totem-mozplugin.i386
RPM also into the x86_64 repo?)
