suggested solution was upgrading fuse. The recent Fedora packages don't
work on SL 4; they rebuild cleanly, but depend on kernel >= 2.6.14 (i.e
one with the fuse module built in). I've also tried rolling back to
the fuse-sshfs-1.9-2.SL package from SL 4.6 and that (not surprisingly)
works fine.

I can reproduce that error. I guess it's not that hard to reproduce.
I'll see what I can do.
I'm mainly looking at Dag's packages, since he has fuse version 2.7.3, it might
be possible to update to that.
