Hi Steve, all,

I think that doing a software RAID would be ok for me...but it did not work after the first try.

I have tried running the standard SL4.7 net install using software RAID. I have created non-RAID swap and RAID partitions for /, /var and /home, and ran the install. After the reboot, it did not start GRUB and froze at that point.

Basically, I want to install SL4 on a desktop machine and make it able to run the standard CMS software, mount standard disks etc. I want to install this on RAID (either software or fake), so I avoid reinstalling and reconfiguring everything in case of a disk failure. It is not terribly important but I would like to try since I have the disks anyway, and it should not be very difficult, should it?

So... if someone could point out what I did wrong, I would appreciate that. Or point me to some instructions. Either fake or software RAID would be fine.

Thanks!

Gena.

You can install Linux on this type of RAID, but it will take some doing. Unless you are dual-booting with Windows, you are better off configuring the system for non-RAID operation (in the bios setup) and using the Linux software RAID. Much easier on the brain.

But if you do need to install on this RAID, let me know - I recently set up a system to dual-boot Windows and SL5 on Intel RAID, using the dmraid software. It was a skull-splitter, but I did get it to work.

Hi everybody,

I am trying to install SL4 on Dell Dimension 9200 with Intel 82801 (ICH8) Raid controller. Not sure how to proceed.

I have configured RAID1 array using the built-in Intel config utility (I have two physical drives, 320G each). When I try to run the 4.5 installer, it sees two separate drives rather than the array. I do not want to create the software RAID, and I am not 100% sure what LVM is.

To my understanding, I should see one raid device instead of two physical disks. How do I achieve that? Am I missing a driver? Is there an installer of SL4.x that can install on such a RAID?

Thanks!

Gena.
