it turned out that dag repositories is already listed in
my SL5.2 installation, i.e. I have the file /etc/yum.repos.d/dag.repo
but inside it had the line
enabled=0
I changed to
enabled=1
and now
yum install vlc
works.

I think you should not let enable=1 in the dag repo but use
rather:
yum --enablerepo=dag install vlc
Otherwise you may have conflicts between SL and Dag repository
after a nightly yum update as I had a few years ago.
I remember CERN have a yum protectbase plugin but I never try
it.
