Sorry if I'm posting incorrectly - I started this with another email but not
sure how to continue the thread.

I`m very new to Linux. I can load an older version (SL 4.4) and it works but I
can`t change the resolution from 800x600.
When I try to load SL 5.3, the x-server will not start at all. What am I doing
wrong

I can load SL 5.3 in text mode and it starts in text - login as root

If I enter:

system-config-display --config --set-resolution 800x600 --set-depth 16
startx

This get me into a graphical display but with only this low resolution. If I
shutdown my machine I have to re-enter the system-config line and manually
start X.

How do I configure things to automatically start in X? How do I get higher
resolutions?

My chip set is Intel 828456/GL
My monitor is an Viewsonic Optiquest V9
