seeing ext4 fs

Is there a way to mount another fs(on the same machine) in ext4(to transfer
files for example for backup purposes).
The idea is that ext4 is not supported by kernels <2.6.28, so I guess we
need to wait for the next SL. Or can one still upgrade the kernel?
