I have not seen this, but I'm also a little confused.
Did you change the main file server and then all of your users are
having this problem?
Did you also update your users to SL 4.8 and now they are having this
problem?
Is this only happening on the fileserver?

I found that a newly created account worked fine.
Removing any unnecessary 'dotfiles' works for most users (haven't really
got the time/inclination to find out exactly which file/subdirectory is
to blame).
As a last resort, I can recreate accounts and home areas for the most
stubborn ones (hopefully not too many of those).
