I usually put ip=, netmask=, gateway=, and dns=, but simplified the
parameter list after the first failure.

Just hit "enter" at the boot line without adding or removing anything.

Can you verify that the network was enabled. You should be able to see info on this by "ctrl-alt-f2" or "ctrl-alt-f3".
