Do you need the whole desktop, or do you just need to be able to run X
applications? I set my systems up so I can log in as root with an SSH
key, use X forwarding, and the installers I've tried have worked fine.

This is a huge problem under MS Windows, but I've never encountered this
under linux. Which programs? If there is a problem doing this with a
linux program, one should file a bug report so people can fix it.
Hi,
Yes, it happened when I connected to a SL 5.5 host from a MS Windows PC.
Usually, I met this problem when installing commercial software. Netvault
used to have a Linux FreeUse version of Netvault Backup. I must log into the
root Desktop to install and configure it.
