Do you need the whole desktop, or do you just need to be able to run X applications? I set my systems up so I can log in as root with an SSH key, use X forwarding, and the installers I've tried have worked fine.

Yes, it happened when I connected to a SL 5.5 host from a MS Windows PC. Usually, I met this problem when installing commercial software. Netvault used to have a Linux FreeUse version of Netvault Backup. I must log into the root Desktop to install and configure it.
