Yasha,
the built in mic is not working. Based on the results from google ( at
least for Ubuntu) that seems to be a constant problem. I came across 2
possible solutions ( disable quick boot in BIOS and this one

<http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1568213&page=2> ). I"ll try it
tonight.
There is another problem which seemed to plague my both machines pc and
laptop - during shutdown the theme "good bye" music is jerky and with
echo. Not that it's important, but on those rare occasions when i do
have sound on, it's annoying.

Which sound is missing: audio out (speaker) or audio in
(microphone)? Does your unit have a built-in microphone? Note that
when one configures audio out, the configuration utility allows one
to play a test sound. system-config-soundcard is the utility under
RHEL 5.6 .

I do not use the input microphone built-into my laptop nor the
microphone input jack, and thus cannot comment on the microphone input.
Sound out works, although, depending upon both application and processor
load, it can get jerky. I have used the machine to play audio-video
DVDs using an external converter to NTSC for NTSC television input, as
well a video RBG inputs, and a direct link from the sound output to the
television audio input. The DVDs played flawlessly without visible or
audible jitter; note that this was the only application running at the
time. I do not own a HDTV (and thus cannot test HDMI, QAM, or ATSC
signals).
