Hi,
  I received an email from Stephen Isard with the suggestion that I change:

smtp-server=exchange.math.ohio-state.edu:587/tls

to

smtp-server=exchange.math.ohio-state.edu:587/tls/novalidate-cert/user=<username>

This fixed my problem.
