Live CD works too.  You want to blank out the second hash.

Before:
   root:a-big-bunch-of-garble:15259:0:99999:7:::

After:
   root::15259:0:99999:7:::

I might have had to do this a few times myself.  Maybe.
I ain't saying. Maybe I accidentally capitalized the
first letter in the Root's password.  Perhaps.
