Boot from installation CD into "rescue" mode, cd /mnt/sysimage/etc, vi shadow
to reset the password string to "" (blank, no password).
Live CD works too. You want to blank out the second hash.

root:a-big-bunch-of-garble:15259:0:99999:7:::
After:
root::15259:0:99999:7:::
I might have had to do this a few times myself. Maybe.
I ain't saying. Maybe I accidentally capitalized the
first letter in the Root's password. Perhaps.
