Bob, It does sound like you might have misconfigured the repository. I would suggest you go the yumex and xfce sites to make sure your repository is set up correctly.
Btw, you "just installed SL6.2.." did you update the rpmforge and gpgkeys? Give this a try, If your machine is 64, then install: * http://packages.sw.be/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.x86_64.rpm * * * 32 bits: * http://packages.sw.be/rpmforge-release/rpmforge-release-0.5.2-2.el6.rf.i686.rpm * * * *finally:* rpm --import http://apt.sw.be/RPM-GPG-KEY.dag.txt Then try to install yumex and xfce again.
