Unfortunately, its version number, 3.4.2, is just one minor revision too
old to use the source-forge repository. Is there anyone who can point to
a repository with octave packages that match the SL octave version number?

You are probably using the octave package from EPEL, as SL does not provide octave. Could you give this a try:

https://admin.fedoraproject.org/updates/octave-3.4.3-1.el6

and see if that helps with using the sourceforge repository?

More volunteers are needed to maintain octave packages in Fedora/EPEL as well. https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/Join
