sometime ago, I tried doing installing from the install DVD using these options:
1) do a local install.
  # yum --disablerepo='*' localinstall  /media/<mountpoint>/<packages> 


2) Can't remember details but you essentially create a repos.d file, call it 
mylocal, in /etc/yum.repos.d, which is simply a copy of sl.repos edited to 
point to your local mountpoint. Remember to delete the file mylocal afterwards!

Note: In (1) I had to explicitly provide the chain of dependent packages yum 
expected (whenever it complained). (Can't remember if (2) had any setbacks).
