with various out-of band repositories which aren't turned on by default.
They will also need the hardware for it to be tested.

That is expecting a lot of work from a free OS with a staff of 1-2 people
whose fulltime job is something else.  For the most part they are just
taking the source code from upstream, recompiling, testing it on their
hardware and then pushing.

I would say it is easier for you to turn off auto-updates. If it doesn't
work in your environment, don't use it.
